‘Paddy’ is another of the Monkey World apes which have a very sad past. Used as a laboratory ape for experiments into asthma. When he arrived at Monkey World, along with others of his kind from who had also suffered in the laboratory, they had almost none of the social skills used by their species, since they’d be kept, for almost all their adult live isolated. They were obese, had various mental illnesses and were terrified of the outside world. (Pencils, Patience and Primates).
Happily, the care and conditions at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset helped them make successful recoveries.
David mentions how he caught Paddy in this melancholy mood one afternoon when his troop had first arrived at Monkey World. And he thought Paddy’s pose and expression perfect for an animal that had suffered so much.
After reading about this I must say Paddy’s portrait looks very emotional, sad and much more beautiful.
